How and Why SculpSure Works: The Science Behind It

While non-invasive fat-reduction techniques such as Thermage have been around for years, SculpSure is a relatively new procedure, having been approved by the FDA for medical use in 2015. Thus, if you have heard about SculpSure from shows like Dr. Oz or E! News, you might be intrigued at how one could lose those flabs without experiencing any discomfort or getting any scars or bruises.

SculpSure is a hands-free device that uses a flexible applicator to treat specific areas of the body. It uses a 1060-nanometer to destroy fat-bearing adipose tissue in the abdomen and flanks within half an hour or less. It is the first laser device of its kind to receive FDA approval for medical use.

In clinical trials involving 100 test subjects in two different sites, scientists were able to detect significant reductions in adipose layer thickness within six to twelve weeks after the treatment. Because it is non-invasive, patients reported experiencing very little discomfort and are able to walk out of treatment centers a few minutes after the procedure. The results were presented at the 2015 conference of the American Society for Laser Medicine and Surgery, after which the FDA granted its approval to bring SculpSure to a larger market.

SculpSure is indicated for individuals with a Body Mass Index (BMI) of 30 or below, which makes it ideal for most overweight (or borderline obese) individuals. However, as the laser is only able to penetrate downto 2-3cm into the subcutaneous (just below the skin) level, any fatty deposits that are located deeper might not be affected. Therefore, a doctor must be consulted to determine the depth and location of the fat layer that needs to be reduced prior to going through SculpSure.
