If you are suffering from decreased energy in spite of adequate sleep and other healthy lifestyle habits, you may require advanced treatment. Fatigue diminishes your energy levels, and can have a negative effect on your mental capacity, motivation, and emotional well-being. Although fatigue can sometimes be attributed to habits or routines that are easy to change, in some cases, it is a symptom of a more serious medical problem. Dr. John Tang can diagnose the causes of persistent fatigue, and help determine a non-surgical treatment that can help you experience a more energetic and enjoyable quality of life. If you have felt a pronounced lack of energy for an extended period of time, fatigue treatments provided at our San Jose practice can help you.

Causes of Fatigue and Their Treatments

Thyroid Disorders: The thyroid is a gland in the front of the neck which produces hormones that control your metabolism.  Thyroid disorders can speed up or slow down metabolism, resulting in a wide range of symptoms, including sluggishness and depression. Dr. Tang goes beyond a routine examination in performing a thyroid examination, instead conducting a complete panel of tests to detect if the thyroid is being attacked by antibodies. In addition, he focuses on the active thyroid hormone detected by the free T3 blood test and works to optimize its level and availability.  In addition, there are many instances when patients have normal TSH (standard blood test used to detect thyroid deficiencies) but have a “sluggish” thyroid due to the inability to convert the normal store inactive thyroid (T4) to the more active free and bioavailable version called T3.  Dr. Tang delves deep into these factors including hormonal, vitamin, and mineral deficiencies to help patients overcome this sluggishness.  When appropriate, Dr. Tang will prescribe Armour, synthetic T4/T3, or T3 hormone versions to provide patients with the best possible combinations to make their bodies function to the most optimal level.  In 2-6 weeks, patients achieve improved energy and alertness, improved mood, weight reduction, more sound sleep, healthier skin, hair and nails, normal temperature hands and feet, improved cholesterol, and improved bowel function.

Adrenal Deficiency: Stress can cause the adrenal gland to produce less adrenaline, the hormone and neurotransmitter that causes increased heart rate, dilated air passages, and constricted blood vessels, when your body requires these reactions. This is called adrenal fatigue.  In severe cases when the adrenal are overworked chronically, this can lead to a condition called “adrenal burnout” where the body is unable to produce the necessary adrenal hormones to maintain normal daily function.  This causes patients to become extremely tired even though they have slept all night.

They will drag on throughout the day, drinking any and everything to boost their energy, for which nothing ever works.  At the end of the miserable day, they essentially collapse and are unable to do anything at home.  During times of increase activity, they take days to recover.  During stressful times, they are unable to handle these situations running away from the situation or have a mental breakdown.  Patients who have adrenal deficiency, also have joint pains, skin irritations (hives, eczema) often during stress, depression (worse with stress), palpitations and anxiety which worsen with stress, allergies to food or the environment, low blood sugar and irritability if meals are delayed, poor concentration, light-headedness, headaches, muscle spasms in the upper back/neck/shoulders, frequent infections, and recurrent yeast infections. If this sounds like you, then you will need to see Dr. Tang. Depending upon your needs, as determined through a comprehensive analysis of your blood or saliva tests and medical history, Dr. Tang can recommend vitamin or herbal supplements to help your adrenal gland once again function properly, helping you to enjoy increased energy. In addition when clinically appropriate, Dr. Tang may prescribe bio-identical hormones to complement the patient’s own production to lift the adrenal function so that patients can enjoy a fruitful day. Menopause: Around age 51, women enter menopause, or a marked decrease in hormone production. This change can result in weight gain, mood swings, sleep disturbances, wrinkled and sagging skin, and decreased sex drive, fertility, and energy. Dr. Tang can provide bio-identical hormone therapy, which can help you have more energy, along with other benefits including stabilized mood, sound sleep, healthier skin, hair, and nails and increased libido.

Andropause: Men begin experiencing a decrease in testosterone production around age 30, and it continues decreasing by about 1 percent every year. This process is called andropause, and it can cause men to experience a decrease in energy, along with erectile dysfunction, loss of muscle mass and tone, low motivation and depressed mood, and weight gain. Dr. Tang also provides bio-identical hormone therapy for men, which can restore a man’s energy while yielding other benefits including improved sexual function, more muscle mass and definition, improved motivation, and loss of weight.

Intestinal Inflammation (Leaky Gut): If your intestines have become inflamed, it can compromise your body’s ability to absorb nutrients, which can result in feelings of fatigue. Also known as “leaky gut,” intestinal inflammation can occur as a result of a food allergies, bacterial overgrowth, poor nutrition, vitamin or mineral deficiencies, the presence of a parasite, and other conditions. Dr. Tang can conduct a thorough analysis of your health and gut to determine whether intestinal inflammation is causing you to experience fatigue and, if so, how best to treat it. Treatment often involves taking vitamins or hormone supplements.

These are the most common symptoms associated with intestinal inflammation:

  •  inflammation
