Laser Resurfacing: The Basics

We can agree that most women want better looking skin.  Fine lines and wrinkles are signs of intrinsic or chronological aging.  As we grow older our skin becomes thinner and drier. The sun’s rays, air pollution, harsh work environments, overall health and nutritional status, hormone imbalances, internal toxins are all other contributing factors to unacceptable facial skin damage.  Although the rate of intrinsic aging is genetically determined, we do have control over extrinsic aging.  In fact, extrinsic aging is the key component in determining who looks older or younger than their biological age.

The good news is that there is hope. Modern technology has come up with the answer. Laser Resurfacing is the answer to many of the skin problems that plague so many women, and also men.

Let’s take a look at how it works:

* This is a procedure that uses intense beams of light energy to make precise microscopic incisions in the skin. The outer layer of skin is reduced as tiny pieces of skin are vaporized. These beams of energy will also heat the underlying surface of the skin which stimulates collagen to grow more robustly. The net effect is that this process causes new growth of collagen fibers, producing new skin that is smoother and firmer, improving the skin texture, softening lines and wrinkles, and tightening the skin.

Laser Resurfacing is recommended for:

* Removal of fine lines and wrinkles around the forehead, eyes (crow’s feet), frown, and/or mouth.

* Acne scars

* Chicken Pox, traumatic, or surgical scars

* Problem skin caused by faulty facelift

* Sun-Damaged or aged skin

* Liver or sun spots

* Loose or lax skin

* Enlarged oil glands on the nose

* Improve skin complexion

Laser Resurfacing before and after 8 weeksThe laser resurfacing process is usually performed with a topical anesthetic. You can have a younger looking face and not have to go through a surgical procedure. Laser treatments for lines and wrinkles have been used for many years with great success. There are special techniques that will actually tighten sagging skin.  This same treatment can also be used to perform the Madonna Eyelift which helps to improve the skin laxity around the upper and lower eyelids, improve the crow’s feet.

This is a medical procedure that should be performed by a highly qualified and experienced cosmetic surgeon or cosmetic dermatologist. There have been horror stories about how these procedures can wind up causing more damage than the patient started with, but these are rare, and illustrate why a competent physician is required.  A qualified and experienced cosmetic surgeon can select the certain specific conditions and indications that would most benefit from this procedure while excluding contraindications such as dark ethnic skin, patients with unrealistic expectations, or other problems that can’t be treated.  This would limit the chances of having unforeseen complications and unhappy patients.

Here at Rejuvé, Dr. John Tang has been doing the laser resurfacing procedure for than 5 years. Dr. Tang also likes to focus on treating the “whole” person, and not just the procedure. The inner body should be properly nourished and well-balanced. Dr. Tang can also analyze the blood to optimize a person’s inner health which would further improve the skin’s health. The outer body can always be enhanced through minimally invasive, non-surgical procedures. We can achieve safe, effective, and natural appearing results with little to no pain or downtime.
