Results vary from patient to patient

What is submental fullness?

Submental fullness is a gathering of excess fat beneath the chin, commonly known as “double chin.” It can be something you’ve had your whole life due to genetics, or start to appear as you get older or if you gain weight.

How does Kybella work?

Kybella is an easy alternative to going ‘under the knife’ because the procedure can be performed in 15 to 20 minutes with a simple injection. This results in a noticeable reduction in fullness under the chin, revealing an improved chin profile. The active ingredient in KYBELLA® is synthetic deoxycholic acid. Deoxycholic acid is a naturally occurring molecule in the body that aids in the breakdown and absorption of dietary fat. When injected into the fat beneath the chin, Kybella destroys fat cells, and once destroyed, these cells can no longer store or accumulate fat.

How many treatments will I need?

Dr. Tang will create a tailored treatment plan based on your chin profile. At each treatment, you will be given multiple small injections under your chin. You may receive up to 6 treatment sessions, spaced at least 1 month apart. Many patients experience visible results in 2 to 4 Kybella treatments. 59% of patients received 6 treatments in clinical studies.

How long will results last?

Unlike other superior facial contouring injectables, such as Restylane and Juvéderm, Kybella is unique because it causes destruction of fat cells under the chin once injected. Once fat cells are destroyed, those cells cannot store or accumulate fat again. The best part – after reaching your desired goal, no further treatment is expected.

Is there downtime from the Kybella treatment?

Patients should expect immediate swelling and some redness. Typically this should last 3-5 days before the swelling subsides. There is some patients who may experience some bruising. The area can be covered with a scarf or a turtle neck sweater or blouse.

Is Kybella painful?

The treatment is not painful though there is some discomfort in the first 10-15 minutes as there may be immediate swelling that causes a heaviness. For some patients there is a temporary stinging sensation for the first 15-30 minutes which plateaus and then diminishes. In terms of the actual injections, patients are topically anesthesized before the procedure so the injections are not noticed.

What are the possible side effects?

As with other injectable treatments, side effects can occur. In the research study that led to FDA approval of KYBELLA®, the temporary side effects noted were swelling, pain, numbness, redness, and areas of hardness around the treatment area. Bruising is always a potential side effect, but this can be minimized by avoiding omega-3s, gingko, garlic, red wine, and aspirin, ibuprofen, Aleve, and other NSAIDS for seven days prior to your appointment. In addition, there is a possible risk of trouble swallowing (which tends to resolve on its own in about 3 days) as well as temporary nerve damage to the jaw, causing an uneven smile. In clinical studies, the incidence of nerve injuries was extremely low, but all cases of nerve issues resolved spontaneously and there was no permanent nerve paralysis or swallowing issues.  The best part — Kybella is an excellent alternative to cosmetic surgery.

Is Kybella FDA approved?

Yes. Kybella was FDA approved in April 2015 for the treatment of submental fullness, the fat below the chin.

Is Kybella Safe?

Kybella has been the focus of a global clinical development program involving over 20 clinical studies with more than 2, 600 patients worldwide, of which over 1, 600 have been treated with Kybella.

Is Kybella right for me?

Only you and a skilled physician can decide if Kybella is right for you. If you’re bothered by fullness under your chin and wish to avoid surgery, seek a consultation with Dr. Tang to discuss your cosmetic concerns.

Who should not receive Kybella?

You should not receive Kybella if you have an infection in the treatment area.

Are there other patients who may not be a good candidate?

Patients with excessive skin laxity, prominent platysmal bands or other conditions for which reduction of submental fact could result in an aesthetically undesirable outcome are not good candidates. Patients should have a professional evaluation by Dr. Tang before being considered for Kybella.
