Hand Rejuvenation

Aging is a process that not only affects the face but the hands as well. Very commonly patients tell Dr. Tang how they believe they look and feel great but, “My hands give away my age.” Features typical to aging hands are several-fold, and present to different degrees, and can all be addressed. Most commonly patients do not like the “wasted” look where the muscle tendons become very visible. Also, there are concerns with age spots, pigmentation, crepey or loose skin, and prominent thick veins. The aging process involves the loss of subcutaneous fat and loose skin which occur through loss of hormones, sun and environmental damage, and lack of regular home care.

Our hands are always exposed to damage from sun, environmental pollutants, and free radicals. We think to protect our faces from these causes of visible aging, but few people take the same care with their hands. Hands can be even more susceptible to these elements, because they have thinner skin that lacks the regenerative properties of higher-density sebaceous glands. Fortunately, there are now several procedures available that can rejuvenate the hands.

At Rejuvé, we combine the latest technologies in lasers and fillers to give you back your youthful-looking hands without surgery or downtime. During your individual consultation, Dr. Tang will personalize a treatment plan to address your concerns so that your hands won’t have to give away your age anymore.

Radiesse is already well known as a filler that can bring about dramatic results, helping to restore volume and reduce the appearance of even deep lines and wrinkles. Now there’s Radiesse for Hands, the first and only injectable that’s FDA approved to correct volume loss in the hands.

Frequently asked questions about hand rejuvenation

How does Radiesse for Hands work?
Radiesse for Hands immediately begins to replenish volume in the backs of the hands, plumping up the skin to raise the skin level and diminish the appearance of tendons, joints, and veins. Injected beneath the skin, you’ll see results instantaneously, and these results can last up to a year without being touched up.

Radiesse for hands is made from calcium hydroxylapatite crystals which is biocompatible with your body. It works by stimulating cells called fibroblasts to naturally produce more collagen. This increases volume, giving your hands a more youthful appearance and a softer, smoother feel.

How long do the results from Radiesse for Hands last?
One reason Radiesse has been a popular facial injectable is the potential for long-lasting results from just one treatment. The volumizing effect of Radiesse for Hands can be seen instantly following your treatment, with results that last up to 1 year. In a recent clinical trial, 86% of patients maintained an improved appearance in their hands 12 months after treatment with Radiesse for Hands.

Are there any side effects from Radiesse for Hands?
The most common side effects that have been reported are swelling, pain, redness, or bruising in the treatment area. This is more or less the same kind of side effects that may occur following other injectable treatments. These typically resolve within 2 weeks without the need for any intervention.

How can I get rid of dark spots or discoloration on my hands?
If your hands are affected by age spots or liver spots, IPL can be used to break up this pigment. The darker pigments in your skin absorb certain wavelengths of light. Using a laser that matches that wavelength allows us to heat the dark pigment to the point that these cells are destroyed without impacting the surrounding, normally-pigmented skin cells. As these cells break down, the dark pigments quickly come to the surface of the skin and begin to painlessly flake off revealing normal skin below. IPL is quite simple and has no downtime and minimal-to-no pain. Typically 3 treatments are required to achieve results. In general, patients do the IPL treatment to restore their normal skin tone before being treated with Radiesse for hands.

What can I do to maintain the results of my hand rejuvenation?
It’s important to know that after any hand rejuvenation treatment, your hands will need to be protected from sun damage — after all, sun exposure is the main cause of pigmentation and brown spots. Regular use of sunscreen is a necessary step, no matter what cosmetic procedure your choose. We have several different kinds of sunscreen that we recommend depending on your individual skin needs and lifestyle, which we’ll discuss during your consultation. Rejuvé also offers other skin products that can be used to maintain the quality and texture of the skin on your hands as well. Just ask, we’re always happy to give you personalized advice!
