Voluma

Rejuvé is excited to offer JUVÉDERM® VOLUMA™, a hyaluronic acid facial filler specifically made to restore age-related volume loss in the mid-face (the cheeks, cheekbones, and chin). Voluma is the latest and longest-lasting injectable HA filler to hit the market!

It uses hyaluronic acid, a sugar that occurs naturally in your skin, to instantly restore lost facial volume in the cheeks and contour the chin. Voluma works with collagen and elastin to improve your skin’s structure and elasticity, creating a smooth, natural look. Read on to learn more about this new treatment.

What is Hyaluronic Acid?
Hyaluronic acid (HA) is a sugar that occurs naturally in the skin, giving it a plump appearance. HA is safely used in other areas of medicine. For example, it is injected into arthritic joints to help with movement and discomfort.

Levels of HA in the skin decline with age. HA is dissolved with a naturally-occurring enzyme called hyaluronidase. Exposure to damaging free radicals from the sun or cigarette smoke can also decrease levels of HA in the skin.

You can find HA in supplements, but these can be ineffective because stomach acids break down the HA before it is absorbed. Glucosamine supplements may help the skin make its own HA. HA is often an ingredient in topical creams, but the large size of HA molecules limits its ability to be absorbed. Injecting HA is the most effective way to get it into your skin.

What makes Voluma different?
Although comprised of hyaluronic acid (HA) like other injectables on the market (such as Juvéderm and Restylane), Voluma is formulated using VYCROSS™ technology. This produces a filler with more lift and a longer duration than other fillers on the market. Voluma was designed to restore facial volume as opposed to just filling wrinkles. The best news is that Voluma can last up to two years and the results are visible immediately after the injection.

Is JUVÉDERM® VOLUMA™ XC FDA approved?
JUVÉDERM® VOLUMA™ XC was initially approved by the FDA in 2013 for cheek augmentation to correct age-related mid-face volume deficit. It received a 2nd FDA approval indication in 2020 for the augmentation of the chin area. It can be used for the temple region of the face but this is considered off label.

What risks are associated with Voluma?
As with other injectable fillers, side effects can occur. In the research study that led to FDA approval of Voluma, the temporary side effects noted were tenderness, swelling, lumps, bumps and pain. Bruising is always a potential side effect, but this can be minimized by avoiding omega-3s, gingko, garlic, red wine, and aspirin, ibuprofen, Aleve, and other NSAIDSfor seven days prior to your appointment. Although Voluma contains an anesthetic, a topical numbing cream anesthetic is often used before the injection for optimal comfort.

Are there other options for restoring facial volume?
Voluma is not the only HA filler approved to treat loss of facial volume in the cheeks. There are some other HA fillers such as Restylane Lyft and Restylane Contour that are FDA approved for the cheeks as well. Other fillers such as Restylane and Juvéderm can be used, but these are not FDA approved to increase facial volume and do not last as long as Voluma does. Radiesse can also be used, but again the duration does not match the two-year duration that Voluma provides.

Is Voluma eligible for the Brilliant Distinctions program?
