Managing Discomfort After Your CoolSculpting Procedure: A Guide by Dr. Tang

The revolutionary, non-surgical CoolSculpting procedure has grown increasingly popular over the last couple of years, and for good reason. This treatment has proven effective at getting rid of fat that resists the slimming effects of exercise and a healthy diet. It’s also been cleared by the FDA, so you can expect it to be safe.

Relying on technology developed by Harvard scientists, the CoolSculpting procedure uses a device that targets, freezes, and causes the natural death of fat cells in the treatment area(s). These fat cells are permanently eliminated, so the effects of the CoolSculpting procedure are lasting as long as you maintain a healthy lifestyle.

As with any medical treatment, however, the CoolSculpting procedure can cause discomfort in the target areas during and after a session. Thankfully, the side effects are mild, occur only within the treatment area or around its edges, and subside within a few days or weeks. Common side effects include:

  • aches
  • blanching
  • bruising
  • cramps
  • firmness
  • redness
  • stinging
  • numbness/tingling

In addition to the above side effects, patients may also experience the following a week or two after their CoolSculpting procedure:

  • itching
  • numbness
  • skin sensitivity
  • swelling
  • tenderness

The CoolSculpting procedure rarely causes serious side effects. Nevertheless, your doctor will be more than happy to discuss ways to decrease your chances of experiencing any discomfort during and after your session.

Dr. Tang will also likely give you the following tips on how to diminish post-treatment discomfort:

  • Pain medication: Thankfully the discomfort is usually mild and so Dr. Tang may suggests taking over-the-counter medication to reduce any discomfort. For example, you may be advised to take 3,000 milligrams of Tylenol every day in divided doses. Alternatively, if patients are seeking a more natural route, Bromelain 500 mg taken 3 times a day can be used. In certain rare cases, patients can develop a more severe neuropathic pain that can be compared to a shingle-like pain. In this situation, Dr. Tang will give a prescription that best matches the patient’s history and profile.
  • Light exercise: Physical activity invigorates the muscles, ensuring the healthy circulation of blood, oxygen, and nutrients which can help speed up the healing process. Just don’t do anything too strenuous, and you’ll be fine.
  • Gentle Massage: Gentle massage with Arnica oil can help to improve blood circulation and help encourage the outflow of swelling. When there is less swelling there will be less discomfort. This will also lessen the healing time needed to return to baseline. Besides, Arnical oil helps to decrease any possible bruising and allow any bruising to disappear sooner. .
  • Meditation: Deep breathing exercises and other forms of meditation can reduce both stress and our sensation of pain, allowing for a more comfortable recovery.

Are you eager to get rid of fat that’s done nothing but defy exercise and a healthy diet? Don’t worry, because those stubborn fat cells won’t survive being frozen by the CoolSculpting procedure.
