Dr. Tang: 4 Ways to Make Your Botox Results Last Longer

Botox is an excellent way to make aging skin looking younger and fresher. Unfortunately, its effects aren’t permanent. To continue enjoying your youthful appearance, you’ll have to return to your physician and repeat the treatment around every 3 to 4 months. Results may vary with the individual, however, and the duration of the effects may be shortened by certain lifestyle choices.

Here are 4 ways you can make your Botox results last longer.

1. Avoid prolonged sun exposure

Sunlight damages skin; excessive exposure to UV rays can lead to premature wrinkling. As Botox works on the muscles beneath the skin, it can’t do much to solve the issue of sun-damaged skin. As such, avoid prolonged exposure to the sun. Wear sunscreen with a minimum sun protection factor (SPF) of 15 and protective clothing such as hats and scarves every time you go out when the sun’s UV rays are strongest (generally between 10 am and 4 pm). Avoid sunbeds, as well.

2. Observe proper skin care

Botox lasts longer if you take good care of your skin, so it’s a good idea to consider a professional line that includes anti-oxidants like Vitamin C, Vitamin E, CoQ10, etc to protect the skin by scavenging free radicals caused by the powerful sun rays and to increase collagen production.

For mature skin, other specialty products that include growth factors, peptides, and Retinoids can also be added. Sufficient hydration also prevents your skin from drying, helps flush out toxins, and keeps the areas treated by Botox smooth and plump. This makes drinking plenty of water every day a necessity.

3. Don’t smoke

Smoking is known to cause an enormous number of issues, including making you look older sooner. Smoking constricts blood vessels and hampers the flow of blood, oxygen, and nutrients to the skin cells, leading to the premature aging of the skin. Smokers are more likely to develop wrinkles around the mouth and eyes earlier than nonsmokers. If you’re a smoker and have just undergone the Botox treatment, do yourself a favor and quit the unhealthy habit.

4. Avoid stress

Stress accelerates aging, so the more stressed you are, the more likely you are to develop wrinkles earlier and shorten the lifespan of your Botox results. Avoid stressors as much as you can and learn stress-relieving techniques such as yoga or meditation.

Last but not least, you must have your Botox injections administered by a certified physician of exceptional reputation. Botox isn’t something that can be done by just anybody; for the treatment to be effective, the physician has to be trained and experienced in the proper treatment sites and appropriate injection dosages.
